About the Role:


The Director of Quality and Engineering Process Improvement at McAfee, the global leader in security solutions, is an extremely prestigious role. The role involves ensuring that we deliver security and peace of mind to millions of customers in the form of invulnerable and quality products. This role takes on additional significance in McAfee’s India site which is McAfee’s largest R&D site and forms the largest quality engineering team as well. This Director role in India is going to consist of two areas of focus: Site-level practices in India and Global initiatives.

In the India role, the Director’s objectives are related to talent acquisition & development, adherence and improvements to the global product development lifecycle, as well as metrics related to products, projects and people. The goal here is to make McAfee’s India Product Development team the best team in McAfee and build a strong positive reputation for the customer experience and engineering quality for McAfee products developed in India. This will be demonstrated through a proven track record and metrics,. The R&D center in India, where this position will be, is McAfee’s single largest of its kind. Being the largest Product Development team globally, the India Engineering team needs to lead by example and help improve the results globally through visible leadership and interaction with other sites.

In the Global role, the Director’s objectives are to stay in sync with his/her global peers and the SVP of Quality, providing input to global initiatives and proactively rolling out those initiatives in India. In this global role, the India Quality Director will need to demonstrate leadership, establish strong relationships with his counterparts, be visible, develop influence, and volunteer for ownership of appropriate global projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership Goal:Demonstrate leadership in product quality and team productivity of the largest R&D team Details

India Site Leadership

1. Take ownership of all the India QA teams for development and growth (matrix relationship)
2. Understand and improve the India product development and testing models, talent, processes and metrics (Dev & QA)
3. Understand and improve productivity of teams and ensure they are same or higher than
4. Establish site-level review and communication mechanisms for quality and engineering process improvement initiatives
5. Develop engineering process, quality and security thought leadership internally and in the security industry through press interactions, publications and presentations in seminars, campuses
6. Own campus research/talent relationship from R&D perspective, develop unique security related programs at select universities
7. Participate actively in India-specific general management initiatives such as Visual Flywheel and others

Global Leadership

1. Develop relationships with global peers and establish regular communication
2. Work with World-Wide SVP of Quality, participate, review and roll out new initiatives
3. Demonstrate visible leadership through internal presentations and participation in solving global engineering and research challenges (e.g., DAT testing process, product security testing )

People Goal: Develop strong QA leaders and teams who are experts in their field and effectively apply their skills Category Details

Training Programs

1. Unit Testing training delivered at all sites, with all engineering staff attending.
2. QA training needs are identified, and the training completed by each person is tracked
3. Additional training programs identified, defined and delivered at the different sites based upon need (includes “generic” training appropriate for all teams, as well as specialist training which may be appropriate only on specific projects).
4. Assist with coordination and execution of Agile and Scrum training for teams at different sites.
5. External training and programs attended are planned, tracked, and aimed at achieving organizational goals

QA Skills Assessments

1. Assess overall collective abilities of the QA organization, including core strengths and weaknesses
2. QA Job descriptions in use by all groups
3. Each QA Engineer’s skills and abilities scored against the job descriptions at least every 6 months
4. Drive the evolution of QA workforce to have a strong number of Software Developers in Test (SDET).
5. Personal development plans in place for each person based upon these results.
6. Maintain a training log showing the training received/required/planned, also any certifications received/pending

Organizational Development

QA Management/Quality Leadership mentorship, includes specific tasks but also development of general managerial skills including people management

1. Ensure the organization has individuals at various levels of development growing into potential leads or managers
2. Clarify “best practices” for working with remote teams and ensure they are effectively applied by all QA teams
3. Assist with the transformation to Agile Development and Test processes by promoting, supporting and coaching on the use of Scrum and XP engineering practices.

Qualifications

Projects Goal:Provide an appropriate level of QA review and oversight to ensure we “Ship Good Stuff On Time” Category Details

Quality Reviews

1. Periodic, regularly scheduled, in-depth reviews of quality improvement strategy, progress, risks, issues. One review should be completed early in the design and development phase, another close to the beta milestone.
2. The number of reviews and exact timing depend upon the size/duration of the project. Ideally each team will be involved in one review every two months, but I should aim to be involved in at least two reviews per month.

Post Release Reviews

1. Review the post release quality metrics, their implications, and what (if any) changes they suggest should be made.
2. Review post-mortem lessons from previous projects and how they are being incorporated into future projects
3. Review post-mortem lessons from other teams and if/how they should be incorporated

Test Status & Progress Reporting

1. Common templates in use by all teams for tracking and reporting test status & progress
2. Includes standard “base” set of quality metrics reported weekly for all projects

Process Goal:Lightweight, effective, continually improving processes consistently applied across the QA organization Category Details

Process Improvement Roadmap

1. Work with each team on the development and maintenance of the roadmap
2. Identify appropriate initiatives on the roadmap for each team to own and help drive their implementation
3. Ensure consistent adoption of identified and agreed upon improvements across all teams.

- Exploratory testing
- Use of Static code analysis and Code coverage tools
- White-box testing
- Test automation
- Agile Development and Testing

Tools & Utilities

1. Consistent use and adoption of McAfee Standard Tools Test Planning
2. Consistent, visible, and collaborative test planning approach adopted by all teams

Sustaining Process

1. Act as the primary interface between Engineering and Support in defining processes and interfaces between the groups
2. Consistent Hotfix, Patch, Service Pack processes and schedules
3. The SLAQ report being used to manage escalations, with appropriate SLA’s being set.
4. Top issues lists being responded to and acted upon

Test Automation

1. Alignment to a common strategy for:

- Black-box functional test automation
- White-box test automation
- Unit test automation
